Comments on Galatians with an ear to Luther’s commentary

Scripture Text: Galatians 2:19 and Psalm 56:1-4

Series: Comments on Galatians

Today's Scripture Jigsaw

Luther does not mean that Christians should be unconcerned about sinning. Hardly; they should attempt to please God by not sinning. In this endeavor, they will be both successful and unsuccessful. So, what Luther is saying is that Christians should not be anxious over the eternal consequences of their sins. The earthly consequence of sin is death. Yet for those who have put their hope in Christ Jesus, who died for their sin, the eternal outcome is life — for even though they are sinners, they are redeemed sinners, sinning saints. When our sins frighten us, we should remember that our hope is not in being sinless; our hope is in our sinless Savior. We must keep our trust in him.
