Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, David, Samuel, and the prophets did great things. They conquered kingdoms, enforced justice, received promises, stopped the mouths of lions, quenched raging fire, escaped the edge of the sword, won strength out of weakness, became mighty in war, put foreign armies to flight. But they did all these things, not in their own might but, by faith.

They did all these extraordinary acts through faith, women even receiving their dead by resurrection — through faith. They were mocked, imprisoned, tortured, and killed for this faith, but they kept it to the end.

All these had not seen the promised Messiah, nor heard his word. But they believed. Even so, we must believe and have faith, we who have not seen the Christ but have indeed, heard his word. We too, must keep the faith until the Last Day when we, along with Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, David, Samuel, the prophets, and all who have kept faith in God’s Christ will be resurrected from earthly death to heavenly, eternal life. And this great deed is also apprehended only by faith.
