Evidence, Not Merit

Comments on Galatians with an ear to Luther’s commentary

Scripture Text: Galatians 3:9 and John 13:13–15

Series: Comments on Galatians

Today's Scripture Jigsaw

In the story of foot washing, Jesus has not given us another sacrament, nor something that must be done to earn salvation. He has given us an example of service that we should humbly follow. We are commanded to serve our neighbor, doing “good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith” (Galatians 6:10). Jesus went further than foot washing, which was only precursor to his sacrifice on the cross. Again, there is no greater love than to lay down our lives for one another (John 15:13) but we are hardly expected to do so in or to earn salvation. We must be careful in these examples of faith working, or of bearing fruit. These are only evidences of faith; washing feet or any other work will never exonerate and justify us to God.
