We should certainly work hard for the Lord. Indeed, everything we do, from the least to the greatest activity, ought to be done as though it were being done for God. At the same time, we must keep in mind that our deeds, however enthusiastically performed, do not earn God’s favor. We must never hope in our efforts but instead, somehow find the faith to fear and trust in God alone, who has determined to freely give us his mercy and grace. His steadfast love performs this for those who have the faith to hope in him. For “without faith it is impossible to please him” (Hebrews 11:6).
