Snubbing Christ
Comments on Galatians with an ear to Luther’s commentary
Scripture Text: Galatians 3:6 and Romans 6:23
Series: Comments on Galatians
If God requires our works in exchange for salvation, then he is duplicitous. Or at least, the Apostle Paul is dishonest. For he has said that eternal life is a free gift (Romans 6:23). He continues in another letter, writing that this grace of God comes to us through faith (Ephesians 2:8). He is very clear that salvation is not the result of our works but that it is freely given (Ephesians 2:9) to us by God in Christ (Romans 6:23; Ephesians 2:7).
So, it would be we who are the liars, not God or the Apostle Paul. If we say that works are required for salvation, we are dishonest, and as Luther said, “snub Christ and all his benefits.” We make ourselves our own saviors when we make our works necessary for eternal life.
