Comments on Galatians with an ear to Luther’s commentary

Luther goes on to mention a group in his time that added more to the gospel requirement for salvation than faith. In doing so, they were ending up with “another gospel.” The gospel declares that believers are saved by faith in the gracious gift of God and not by any prior or subsequent works they do. But if you have to be baptized a specific manner, or also speak in tongues, or stop smoking, drinking, dancing, playing cars, or otherwise add to your faith anything else in order to be saved, then you are no longer talking about the gospel. Now it is “another gospel.”

People are rarely content with God’s plan; they usually want more. Adam and Eve wanted more than walking with God and insisted on their own way. The Judaizers of Paul's day, wanted more and insisted on circumcision and Moses. Certain brands of pietists want more than faith and demand their brand of morality. All of these extras shove God into the corner — if he gets that much room.
