The Ledger
Comments on Galatians with an ear to Luther’s commentary
Scripture Text: Galatians 2:16 and Colossians 2:8-14
Series: Comments on Galatians
It is a pretty thought: a system of credits and debits. How much do I need to pay in order to bring my balance to a favorable position? It just is not biblical. Nor practical. How would you know when your debt is paid? How would you even know how much a sin costs or what a particular good deed is worth? What if you went in debt again right before you died and had a chance to pay? It is a glorious thing that God has the answer to such questions.
God has cancelled the debt on your ledger. You do not owe him a thing. You had once owed him your life because you were dead in your sins. Yet God has made you alive with himself. In other words, he has given you eternal life. He did so by forgiving the debt in your account. He completely set it aside, nailing your ledger to the cross.
