Comments on Galatians with an ear to Luther’s commentary

Scripture Text: Galatians 3:9 and Mark 16:15–16

Series: Comments on Galatians

Today's Scripture Jigsaw

Jesus taught his followers many things but the last thing he told them might be considered the most important. Often, our last words are considered most important, that thing that we want people to remember. Luther’s last words were, “We are beggars; this is true.” He wanted his followers to remember that our salvation is received from God’s open, giving hand, not because of our works.

Jesus’ last words, or at least the last ones that we have recorded in the gospels, are “go” and “proclaim.” This is the blessing for the nations promised to Abraham so long ago. Through the Christ, Abraham’s offspring, comes the blessing of good news, the gospel of Jesus Christ. It is the office of the church to spread this blessing to the nations through the proclamation of the gospel, preaching and teaching through Word and Sacrament.
