Paul was amazed and perplexed, wondering what had gotten into the “foolish Galatians.” What could he say, but to express incredulity? In describing how justification works, Paul must have thought, “Why?” Why would anyone trade God’s free grace for bondage to the law? It did not make sense. It does not make sense today either. Yet people do it every single day, insisting one must do this or that in order to be right with God. What has gotten into us?
