The Christian life is demanding. It is difficult. Afflictions and crosses are challenging and distressing. Our Lord’s life was also hard and cruel. He said as much in the garden, “If it be possible, let this cup pass from me” (Matthew 26:39). The demands of life often press us too. We are not, as Christ’s disciples, promised an easy life, nor are we free of tragedy. Yet when God’s law has driven us to his sustaining grace we find times of refreshing and rest. We discover that there is now lightness to our burdens. The fear and uncertainty that accompany the demands of the law and life are now buoyed by joy and peace. As Luther said, “When sin has been pardoned, and the conscience has been eased of its dreadful load, a Christian can endure all things in Christ.”
