Freedom to Serve
Comments on Galatians with an ear to Luther’s commentary
Scripture Text: Galatians 3:5 and John 8:31–32
Series: Comments on Galatians
So, we see that those who hear the gospel with faith in Christ begin to abide in his Spirit, and his Spirit in them. One way we see this happening is when one’s belief goes deeper, abiding in the whole of God’s Word, not remaining in a simple and superficial belief in, or assent to, God. This means that they become faithful, both by faith in God and by good works for their neighbor. True faith sets a person free to do these works without regard to checking them off a religious list. Faith in Christ Jesus sets them free from sin and death and the rule of the devil so that they are freed to serve God and neighbor. This freedom to serve therefore, cannot come from serving or the performance of deeds; it comes from hearing the gospel with faith. It is the Spirit’s liberating work in you.
