Correction comes to us all from time to time. Sometimes it will be gentle and at other times it may seem like a harsh rebuke. The approach Paul took, using severe and public correction, was not simply a matter of how bad the wrong was but who it might affect, how far the wrong might spread.

Another distinction to note is one’s willingness to receive correction. The wise person is not merely able to discern the correctness of the correction but knows that in it, God speaks, despite the reliability of the rebuke or even the attitude of the one doing the rebuking. It is the attitude of the one reproved that makes the difference. Sometimes the correction God is making in us is simply a willingness to hear correction.
