The Rub
Comments on Galatians with an ear to Luther’s commentary
Scripture Text: Galatians 3:6 and Isaiah 7:10–17
Series: Comments on Galatians
Reason cannot explain how God’s Son could be born from a virgin. It is an odd thing that unbelief comes so easily. Today, doctors can implant a fertilized egg in a virgin and nine months later, a baby will be born. Oh, that is easier to belief, Reason replies, for man and science made it happen. There is the rub: Reason believes in the mind of man while faith believes in the promises of God.
Long ago, God promised that his Christ and Son would be conceived in the womb of the Virgin Mary and born incarnate, both God and man. “The Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel” (Isaiah 7:14). Faith believes he kept his promise.
