The Transfusion
Comments on Galatians with an ear to Luther’s commentary
Scripture Text: Galatians 3:6 and Philippians 3:7–9
Series: Comments on Galatians
If salvation is a matter of God forgiving us once and then we have to live perfectly, never again sinning, then we are all lost. Why would the Lord have taught us to pray, “Forgive us our trespasses”? Because “sin lingers in us,” as Luther wrote, our righteousness must then, come from without. It cannot come from us for, left to ourselves, we are riddled with unrighteousness. So, we should easily see we need help. Luther said we need a transfusion of Christ’s righteousness. We cannot get this by doing the Great Physician’s work for him. We can only lay on the operating table and receive his righteousness.
