It bears repeating: You have been set free by God through Christ — not by the things you do. The Spirit bears witness to this truth. Yet your conscience (and sometimes your church) gives false testimony and sends you into a panic. Your conscience and others point to your sins and condemn you. The Spirit points to Christ and liberates you. This is the truth that sets you free and keeps you free (John 8:31-32). Continue to abide in Christ’s liberating word. He has come to set you free. This is the Jubilee (Leviticus 25:10)! Do not go back into captivity. Abide in Christ. Trust in what he has done for you, no matter what you have done. Just abide. Rest. In him. Continue to look up to him — not at yourself. When it comes to trying harder, consider your sins. At the moment when that view of your sins begins to condemn you, look away. Look to Christ. He has set you free. Abide in that truth.
