Comments on Galatians with an ear to Luther’s commentary
Scripture Text: Galatians 3:10 and Luke 18:9–14
Series: Comments on Galatians
Paul wrote that, “all who rely on works of the law are under a curse.” This includes everyone: Jews, gentiles, believers, unbelievers — everybody. Jews performing the law with painstaking care, but relying on those religious works in order to earn God’s merit are under a curse. Non-Jews who place their trust in other gods are under a curse. Christians who put their trust in a certain amount of water or particular rituals or observances pertaining to food and drink or movies or cars or dancing, and relying on their corner of “truth” for salvation are under a curse. People who rely on their own works, lifetime after lifetime, endeavoring for perfection are under a curse. Those who rely upon their own deeds or goodness — Christian or not — are under a curse.
