From the Confessions: The Small Catechism, The Third Commandment

Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy.

What does this mean?

Answer: We should fear and love God so that we do not despise his Word and the preaching of it, but acknowledge it as holy, and gladly hear and learn it.

Pulling It Together: Faith comes through the proclaimed word of Christ Jesus, the message of the gospel. It is the good news because salvation comes by no other name (John 14:6). Jesus Christ is the way to the Father (Ephesians 2:18). We should remember the one day above all others each week when this good news may be heard, and pray that by our holy example, others will come and hear the gospel proclaimed by a preacher, hear it, believe, and be saved. In this example, we see that the day is observed, not only for ourselves, but for others.

Prayer: Order my priorities, Holy Spirit. Amen.
