Leviticus 26–27
Scripture Text: Leviticus 26:1–27:34
Series: Read the Bible in a Year
There are blessings for obedience to God. If the Israelites do not make idols and if they keep his sabbaths, then God will give them favorable weather, and an abundance of the fruits of the earth, and peaceful times, as the service of Evening Prayer puts it. More importantly, God will dwell among them and walk among them.
There is also punishment for disobedience. The punishments are essentially the opposite of the blessings. God punishes disobedience in order to drive his people back to him and to the commandments. The commandments are good for us — another blessing of God — so his punishment is not because his people are bad but so that God's goodness may be enjoyed by them.
God also promises forgiveness. If the people confess their sin, he will forgive and remember his covenant to bless.
The last chapter of Leviticus is about voluntary vows or freewill offerings — as opposed to those imposed by God in the first chapters of the book — for the upkleep of the sanctuary. All of God's people are responsible for this maintenance.
Tomorrow, we begin reading the book of Numbers.
