Numbers 23–25

Scripture Text: Numbers 23:1–25:18

Series: Read the Bible in a Year

Balak tries to convince Balaam to curse the Israelites, in the hope that he might defeat them. Balaam blesses the people instead. In the second of the four oracles, Balak is making an offering while Balaam consults with God. Perhaps the offering is meant to smooth the way for his evil desires to be granted. But God cannot be charmed (Numbers 23:23) and Balaam is sent away with another blessing for the Israelites, for he must do all that the Lord dictates (Numbers 23:26).

As you might imagine, Balak is upset. Yet, Balaam continues with a third oracle. In it, he prophecies of a coming king, who like his people, God will bring out of the land of Egypt (Numbers 24:8). Also, instead of cursing Israel, Balaam curses Balak (Numbers 24:9). Or rather, Balak curses himself by cursing Israel.

God continues to not allow Balaam to curse Israel. He will love this rebellious people for his own sake, not because of their faithfulness to him. Nor will he allow them to be cursed for their lack of faithfulness, for God is faithful even when we are faithless (2 Timothy 2:13). His ultimate faithfulness to sinners is prophesied in Balaam's final oracle. Read Numbers 24:17 and think of who this verse prophesies.

Despite all of God's faithfulness, the people take part in the fertility rites of Baal, orgies meant to satisfy the idol and their own lusts. The grandson of Aaron turns back the wrath of God but not before 24,000 Israelites die of a pague of judgment.
