Leviticus 11–13
Scripture Text: Leviticus 11:1–13:59
Series: Read the Bible in a Year
Chapters 11–15, the first three of which we will read today, deal with matters of cleanness and uncleanness. This section has been called a manual on purity. Why were these things distinguised in the lives of the Israelites? Some say, they are distinctions between what pagans did and what God's people were to do. Others say they are symbolic of spiritual things. Many say these are matters of hygiene meant to keep the people alive so the covenant could be realized. And some say that these are simply rules to test the obedience of the people. Perhaps it is all four.
Chapter 11 deals with clean and unclean living things that may be eaten. Chapter 12 is about purification following childbirth. Chapter 13 (and then 14, but that is for tomorrow) is about skin diseases and how to treat them.
