Leviticus 14–15
Scripture Text: Leviticus 14:1–15:33
Series: Read the Bible in a Year
Leprosy is a term for many kinds of skins diseases and even infections of clothing and dwellings (mold and mildew). These unclean conditions can separate individuals from the community. In our reading today, we see God's guidelines for how to deal with various leprosies and how to restore people to the community.
Although this may be viewed as simply practical, the comparisons to the spiritual are evident. We are unclean at birth and must be washed and restored to God an dhis community. Then sin can break out like a leprosy and contaminate us, separating us from God and each other. In the Old Testament, the priests made sacrifices to atone and restore. In these last days, Christ is our sacrifice for all sin, which is received by faith instead of ritual.
Leviticus 14:21–32 provides an interesting parallel to our bondage to sin. As there was provision for those who could not afford the offerings for their purification, God provides the way for we who can never afford the sacrifice for our sins.
Bodily emissions are dealt with in chapter 15. While there is nothing inherently unclean about emissions from sexual organs, God declares these ritually unclean. The main points of all this are found in 15:31, that unclean people are kept from contaminating the clean are kept separate from one another, and that they not defile the tabernacle.
