Deuteronomy 5–7

Scripture Text: Deuteronomy 5:1–7:26

Series: Read the Bible in a Year

The Ten Commandments are reiterated in today's reading. Remember that Deuteronomy means Second Law. The commandments were first given in Exodus 20; this is the second telling. The people are reminded of where and how the commandments were first give, as it was a generation earlier and none of the people had been at Mt. Sinai at that time.

Chapter six teaches how to teach the commandments to our children. Verse four begins the Shema, a word meaning "hear," and a daily prayer for Jewish people that is still recited today. Verse five is the so-called greatest commandment. Notice that it is simply summary of all ten commandments, stating, in simplest terms, that we should love God and neighbor.

Instructions are given for taking the land: that no one is to be left from the previous culture, lest the Israelites intermarry and become pagan. God is holy and expects his people to be holy. He is faithful to his people and expects them to be faithful to him.
