Deuteronomy 8–10

Scripture Text: Deuteronomy 8:1–10:22

Series: Read the Bible in a Year

Remember the Lord your God. But how? Dwell in his Word. Keep all his commandments. Remember what he has done for you and give thanks. In the midst of these things, never think that you are where you are in life, or where you think you are going in eternal life, because of your own righteousness (Deuteronomy 9:4). Depending on our own righteousness is nothing more than man-made religion, the casting of golden calves. It is rebellion against God and the great sin of religion.

Because of these sins, Moses pleaded with God, mediating time after time, rebellion after rebellion, disobedience and distrust never ending. He even did so for Aaron (Deuteronomy 9:19–21). This is what Jesus has done for us once for all. He is our Mediator before God (Hebrews 12:18–24). "God has appointed Christ as mediator, promising to be gracious to us on his account, not because of our righteousness" (The Defense of the Augsburg Confession, "Concerning Human Traditions in the Church").

Moses recounts the making of new tablets and remembers the wilderness history up to their present. Now, he says, what does the Lord require of you? Moses tells them a few things that God requires (Deuteronomy 10:12–16) but it boils down to this: stop being so stubborn towards God. After all, the Israelites were a mere 70 people when they went to Egypt during the famine in Joseph's day. Now they are "as numerous as the stars of heaven" (Deuteronomy 10:22).
