Deuteronomy 14–16
Scripture Text: Deuteronomy 14:1–16:22
Series: Read the Bible in a Year
Various regulations are given, dealing with bodily cleanness — what must not be eaten and what is not to be done to the body. Then the people are commanded to tithe (or give ten percent) of their harvest each year. At the end of seven years, all debts are to be forgiven. God intends there to be no poor people in the land (Deuteronomy 15:4). He forbids borrowing from foreign nations. How great would it be if the US had followed this statute!
Regulations are provided for keeping the Passover (a remembrance of the exodus, particularly God sparing the firstborn of Israel) and the Feast of Weeks (or Pentecost, thanksgiving given ahead of time for a bountiful harvest) and the Feast of Booths (a harvest festival).
