Deuteronomy 24–27
Scripture Text: Deuteronomy 24:1–27:26
Series: Read the Bible in a Year
Various relational regulations are declared in the first two chapters of today's reading. Some of it is exacting and brutal to our modern sensibilities, yet it shows how determined God is to have his people take sin seriously.
Chapter 26 teaches trust in the Lord. When the people come into the land, their very first produce myst be offered to the Lord in thanks for bringing them into the land of promise. This would cause the people to trust God. What if nothing more grew or a natural disaster or enemy destroyed the crops? They were to trust God for their future.
When the people cross over the Jordan, they are to erect a plastered monument on which they were to write a copy of the law. An altar is also to be erected where offerings would be made to the Lord. At this point (Deuteronomy 27:9), the people are declared God's people, and so, reminded to keep his commandments. Then various curses are announced, which correspond to the commandments, for those who do not keep the commandments.
