Deuteronomy 28–29
Scripture Text: Deuteronomy 28:1–29:29
Series: Read the Bible in a Year
Our chapters today remind us that God has placed before us blessing and curse. Choose wisely. The curse is for those who will not receive the blessing. Yet the curse is intended to drive people to the blessing of God's mercy. This is God's interest: not to punish but to bless. God does not take any pleasure in the death of wicked people (Ezekiel 18:23) but desires all to receive his greatest blessing: eternal life with him (1 Timothy 2:4; 2 Peter 3:9).
This being the case, he has given us his Word so that the mysteries of the ages may be revealed to us. There is nothing hidden anymore; there are no secrets — save for those who will not believe. Even the wilderness people had God's law and so, knew exactly what God wanted them to do.
We, however, are blessed to live in a golden age of the Word. God has spoken to us, not through patriarchs and prophets but, through his own Son and later through his apostles. He has revealed the way of salvation, both written and preached.
There is no reason for a curse. God has opened the way for the blessing of salvation for all who believe.
