Numbers 33–34
Scripture Text: Numbers 33:1–34:29
Series: Read the Bible in a Year
Our reading today begins with recounting recent history, the history of a generation. It briefly retells the story of the God who brought his people out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. The history lesson recounts all that God has done for them up until the present time when they are expected to drive out the inhabitants of the land of Canaan. Particularly, they are to destroy all the idols and places of worship (called "high places").
God promises them that if they do not do so, it will become a problem for them, and he will do to the Israelites what he had planned to do to the Canaanites.
In the chapter 34, the inheritance is plotted out. God makes very clear the land he is giving them to possess. The final paragraph of today's reading lists those tribal chiefs who are to divide the inheritance among the people.
