Leviticus 8–10
Scripture Text: Leviticus 8:1–10:20
Series: Read the Bible in a Year
Moses distinguishes Aaron as the high priest, and his sons as priests. This consecration is marked by the garments they wear, anointing and offerings, and unleavened bread. Note that Aaron is consecrated as high priest despite his great sin of making the golden calf idol and presiding as usurping spiritual leader of the people (Exodus 32:1–35). This shows, not only God's but, Moses' forgiveness.
Aaron is the first high priest of the people but in these last days, Chrsit Jesus is our great high priest forever (Hebrews 4:14–5:6). Christ is our only mediator, righteousness, and salvation.
In chapter 9, Aaron makes offerings to the Lord. They are accepted, finalizing God's acceptance of Aaron as high priest. Of interest is the fire that comes from the Lord and consumes the fat of the offering at the end of the chapter (Leviticus 9:24).
Chapter 10 begins with that same fire consuming two of Aaron's sons who had not followed the Lord's instructions. Moses instructs the priests to not grieve in normal ways, but to carry on their duties faithfully. God is among us in both wrath and grace, wrath in the case of the thoughtless use of unholy fire, and grace in Aaron's remaing sons confusing how to make offerings (Leviticus 10:16–20). Because the latter fault was done in sincerity, the priests were forgiven.
