Leviticus 24–25

Scripture Text: Leviticus 24:1–25:55

Series: Read the Bible in a Year

Aaron and his sons are tasked with many priestly duties, two of which are keeping the lamps burning daily before the Lord, and preparing loaves of bread to sit before him each Sabbath. In these last days, these are things our great high priest (Hebrews 4:14), Jesus, does for us.

He is the light of the world (John 8:12) to bring believers out of darkness (John 12:46) into his marvelous light (1 Peter 2:9).

He is the bread of life (John 6:35) our daily bread who gives us himself in Holy Communion (Matthew 26:26) that we may have eternal life (John 6:53–55).

Rules for blasphemy and justice conclude chapter 24.

Chapter 25 (as well as 26 tomorrow) teach about Sabbath years and the Year of Jubilee. Just as one may work six days but must rest on the Sabbath, the earth may be sown and harvested six years, but in the seventh year, fields are to lie fallow. Volunteer crops may be gleaned but the land must otherwise rest. Every fiftieth year a jubilee, a time for special celebration, as all lands are returned to the original owners and slaves are set free. Christ Jesus is our rest (Matthew 11:28-30) and jubilee (Luke 4:18).
