Law and Gospel

Comments on Galatians with an ear to Luther’s commentary

Scripture Text: Galatians 3:1 and Matthew 5:43-48

Series: Comments on Galatians

The Law should certainly be promoted. It makes people aware of their sin and what they should do to please God. Yet if the law alone is advocated, soon enough, people despair because they never live up to its demands, and so, fear God’s wrath. This is why the gospel must be taught. People learn from the law that God demands moral excellence. When they fear God, the Holy Spirit drives them to Christ’s gospel where they come to trust God more. They learn from the gospel that God loves them in spite of their deficiencies. Having feared and trusted God, they now love him more completely. So, we see how God is at work, making us love him more and more, with a whole heart.
