No Exaggeration
Comments on Galatians with an ear to Luther’s commentary
Scripture Text: Galatians 3:13 and Isaiah 53:4–6
Series: Comments on Galatians
Luther wrote, “All the prophets of old said that Christ should be the greatest transgressor, murderer, adulterer, thief, blasphemer that ever was or ever could be on earth.” This is no exaggeration for whatever sin you and I have committed was laid upon the Christ. Whatever sins the entire world — every sinner who ever lived — sinned, those were borne by Christ Jesus to the cross. This too, is no exaggeration; it is the very weight of what it means to be the Savior. He bore our sins, not symbolically but really. He carried in himself the full weight of our sin, its guilt and its consequences. As a result, he was cut off from his Father, and his own Spirit left him. The one person who was innocent, among more than 100 billion sinners who have ever lived, was pierced to the very soul for the guilt of we countless evildoers. One man was considered by the Father as the evil one, for in fact, he truly became evil, carrying the transgressions of us all to the cross.
