Was Christ crucified so that you could be a better person? A moral person? No. Christ died so that you, a sinner, could be alive in him forever. If you become a better person on earth in the meanwhile, so much the better. But morality will not save you because while it may make you a better person, it will not make you righteous. Only the Christ of the cross accomplishes that feat. This word of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.
