The Beloved Disciple

Comments on Galatians with an ear to Luther’s commentary

Scripture Text: Galatians 2:20 and John 20:2-4

Luther reminds us that, Christ did not love only Peter and Paul and John, but that he loves us with the same love he felt for them. In this sense then, we become beloved disciples. This idea of a “beloved disciple” is used five times in John’s Gospel, but the author does not actually name “the disciple whom Jesus loved.” Perhaps this is because a close reading will have the reader identifying with John, in which case the reader becomes that beloved disciple. This is not difficult to imagine, since Jesus loves you every bit as much as Peter and Paul and even John. He gave his life for you. There is no greater love than this (John 15:13).
