The Disappointment of God
Comments on Galatians with an ear to Luther’s commentary
Scripture Text: Galatians 3:2 and Acts 11:1-18
Series: Comments on Galatians
God’s gifts are always free. They cost us nothing and come to us even before we have a chance to earn them. This favor is God’s good and gracious gift to us. Yet later, though we know better, we try to earn God’s favor anyway. How disappointed God must feel at our lack of faith, our lack of gratitude. What we at first received freely we now try to purchase with our goodness. The irony is that even if God’s gifts were for sale, we are deficient in the goodness or holiness needed to purchase them.
