• Collect: O Lord, deliver us from love of self so that we may seek to love you with a whole heart and mind, and with what strength you give us be of service to our neighbor. Amen.
• Psalm 119:97–104
• Mark 12:28–31
• You shall have me alone as your God. What is the force of this, and how is it to be understood? What does it mean to have a god? What is God? Answer: A god means that from which we are to expect all good and to which we are to take refuge in all distress, so that to have a God is nothing else than to trust and believe him from the heart. I have often said that the confidence and faith of the heart alone make both God and idol. If your faith and trust is right, then your God is also true. On the other hand, if your trust is false and wrong, then you do have the true God, for these two belong together: faith and God. That upon which you set your heart and put your trust is properly your god. [The Large Catechism, The First Commandment]
• Benediction: May you honor God’s name and day, and be of humble service to your neighbor because the Lord alone is your God. Amen.
• You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. (Matthew 22:37–39)
