• The Sixth Commandment: You shall not commit adultery. What does this mean? Answer: We should fear and love God so that we may lead chaste and decent lives in our words and deeds, and each one love and honor his spouse.
The Seventh Commandment: You shall not steal. What does this mean? We should fear and love God so that we do not take our neighbor’s money or property, nor steal from them using crooked business practices or poor merchandise, but help him improve and protect his property and business.
The Eighth Commandment: You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. What does this mean? We should fear and love God so that we do not lie, betray, slander, or defame our neighbor, but instead, defend him, speak well of him, and put the best construction on everything he does.
The Ninth Commandment: You shall not covet your neighbor’s house. What does this mean? We should fear and love God so that we do not craftily seek to get our neighbor’s inheritance or house, and obtain it by a show of [justice and] right, etc., but help and be of service to him in keeping it.
The Tenth Commandment: You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, nor his workers, his livestock, or anything that belongs to him. What does this mean? Answer: We should fear and love God so that we do not estrange, force, or entice away our neighbor’s wife, servants, or livestock, but urge them to stay and do their duties. • “May We Thy Precepts, Lord, Fulfill,” Edward Osler Tune
May we your precepts, Lord, fulfill
and do on earth our Father’s will
as angels do above;
still walk in Christ, the living way,
with all your children, and obey
the law of Christian love.
So may we join your name to bless,
your grace adore, your pow’r confess,
to flee from sin and strife.
One is our calling, one our name,
the end of all our hopes the same:
a glorious crown of life.
Spirit of life, of love, and peace,
unite our hearts, our joy increase,
your gracious help supply.
To each of us the blessing give
in Christian fellowship to live,
in joyful hope to die.
• Benediction: May you honor God’s name and day, and be of humble service to your neighbor because the Lord alone is your God. Amen.
• You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. (Matthew 22:37–39)
