Genesis 30–31
Scripture Text: Genesis 30:1–31:55
Series: Read the Bible in a Year
It is the old story again: the Patriarch's wife bears no children. Rachel is childless. Are the so-called fruit of the loins the work of a man or of God? Is it any less so with spiritual matters like justification and sanctification? Who is doing the heavy lifting in all these things?
Such pettiness existed between Sarah and Hagar, Rachel and Leah, and exists in families and congregations even now. But we see that God will still answer our prayers if it accomplishes his purposes, even in the midst of pettiness and trickery. Through both Rachel and Leah are the Twelve Tribes birthed.
Jacob tricks Uncle Laban like he tricked his father and brother. In the end, Laban is chasing Jacob, his family, and his flocks. But because God promised to be with Jacob, he tells Laban in a dream to not speak against Jacob. Does this imply that Jacob would also come to no physical harm from Laban?
