Scripture Text: Genesis 25:1–26:35
Series: Read the Bible in a Year
Abraham had a second wife after Sarah died. He also had concubines. As a result, he had a big family. But only one was Abraham's legal heir. In our first chapter today, he gives gifts to all his sons and sends them away from Isaac. Besides insuring his inheritance, this brings the story's focus on the one whom God would establlish his covenant.
Issac's sons, despite God's promise, are trouble. As a result, we quickly see that we must trust God's promose too. From Isaac's troubled family would come the promised Messiah. But looking at Jacob and Esau, one wonders at the material God has to work with. Is this similar to the church? When surveying the pews, is it difficult to imagine how God can use his church?
Some of our ways are difficult to overcome because they are family traits. For all of Abraham's faith, it had still been hard to trust the Lord in threatening situations. Isaac now, as his father before, has a beutiful wife whom he lies about, saying that she is his sister.
