Genesis 27-29
Scripture Text: Genesis 27:1–29:35
Series: Read the Bible in a Year
In his old age, Isaac is tricked into blessing Jacob, his second son. Still, Esau, the first son and legitimate heir, had sold his birthright to his second son, Jacob. Christians can be a strange mixture of these two boys, sometimes neglecting our birthright through sin and manipulating distrust, while at other times clinging to the promise of forgiveness and salvation in God's Christ.
Jacob is sent away to his Uncle Laban Paddan-aram, an area just south of Haran where Abram had traveled with his father. Does it seem to you like Jacob is being sent back the route of his grandfather on purpose? Is there anything he could learn in doing so?
Read John 1:51, then compare it with Jacob's dream in Genesis 28:10–17. Do you think it was the preincarnate Son of God who appeared to Jacob?
Luther wrote about chapter 29, "Without consent, agreements, and discussion the daughter is seized by the father and placed on the nuptial bed of Jacob." He continues, "If these were the customs of those people, they certainly were very bad.” How do you respond to Luther's charge? Are they just different times or have people wandered even further from the garden?
