It is an easy observation and perhaps a mark of true conversion—as opposed to what often occurs in so-called, altar call Christianity. When persons are truly born again, they are on fire for the Lord, instead of having the cool emotions and slackness of faith that Luther observed. They read their Bibles, perhaps memorizing portions; they want to be in worship and study; they tell others about Jesus. Unless one keeps in God’s Holy Word, he soon cools off, our Lord’s commission (Matthew 28:19-20) is forgotten, and mere religion follows.

Real Christianity is not seasonal so, the apostle’s admonition is to stay in the Word when others turn from the truth. Indeed, he insists that it be proclaimed all the more! Where do you stand with the Lord today? Are you content with religion or are you ready to fulfill your ministry? Have you left your faith at the altar or are you prepared today to continue following Jesus?
