Luther says later (in the preface to chapter five) that Paul used “every device” to keep the Galatian Christians “in the freedom achieved for them by Christ.” “Thunderbolts of words” were deployed in the forms of both threats and promises. Paul tried everything to get through to the Galatians. He used gentle persuasion, allegory, theology, and reprimand. This is what a pastor does. He does not give up until he is out of options. Even then he does not quit, since he entrusts the matter to God, our last and supreme device.
