Comments on Galatians with an ear to Luther’s commentary
Scripture Text: Galatians 2:19 and John 15:13-15

Luther speaks of the law, death, and the devil with contempt. He says that Jesus “manhandles” them, holding them down, so that they cannot hurt the one whose life is found in Christ. The backdrop for these thoughts is found in Luther’s most famous hymn, “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God.” The power of the devil is great indeed; no one on earth is so powerful. So, Luther put his trust in One more powerful, the Son of Heaven. Do “you ask who that may be? Christ Jesus! It is he.” Though the world might be filled with countless devils, adding to Satan’s rage, there is still One more powerful, whose very Name conquers evil. Therefore, we need not fear. The eternal God has allied with we mortals. He has called us his friends and the perfect love of such a Friend casts out all fear of the devil’s accusations, his hatred, or even death. Our Friend, Jesus, stands in the path of all of these threats, and we may confidently stand with him.
