How a Nobody is a Somebody
Comments on Galatians with an ear to Luther’s commentary

Put no trust in your office or pedigree. God is able to make asses speak his word (Numbers 22:22-30). The emphasis is always on the One calling and not upon the one called. The work depends not on us but instead, upon him. We are expected to be faithful to our calling and to the One who calls us. We are not expected to produce results — especially by being extra religious. Comfort yourself in the knowledge that God is faithful even you are not faithful (2 Timothy 2:13).
Dwight L. Moody said, “Moses spent 40 years thinking He was a somebody, then 40 years learning that he was a nobody, and then 40 years seeing what God can do with a somebody who realizes they are a nobody!” Remind yourself who you are today: a nobody, called through grace — “grace alone, as Luther rightly insists — by a faithful God. Now expect him to do something with your life in spite of yourself.
