In the reading from Acts, we see men — who could not comprehend the kingdom of Christ, nor cast out demons, or feed the masses — now ministering the gospel “with great power.” Once Jesus had died, was resurrected and ascended, they could no longer believe in him because he stood before them. They had to walk by faith, not by sight (2 Corinthians 5:7). Moreover, through faith in the now ascended Christ Jesus, these apostles were given his Holy Spirit. The result is that men who could achieve but a little while keeping the law, were now ministering in the great power of the Holy Spirit — not by that same law but through faith. 

Faith is critical to ministering the gospel with influence. Depending on our religious works will get us nowhere, or at best, accomplish just a little. This is precisely because we are not believing in the central point and focus of the gospel. We would be believing in ourselves and depending on human power for a divine mission. He who supplies the Spirit to us and works miracles among us, does so by hearing with faith, not by works of the law.
