Prop or Power

Comments on Galatians with an ear to Luther’s commentary

Scripture Text: Galatians 3:5 and Romans 15:18–19

Series: Comments on Galatians

Today's Scripture Jigsaw

When we hear the Word of God with faith in what God has done and still does for us, we respond in faithful ways. Good fruit is produced by the Spirit who works within us. But when we introduce a sham piety of doing these deeds for ourselves and our religion, instead of for our neighbor, they have the opposite result. We lose interest in our neighbor and focus on self, on piety, on religion. The Word is only used to prooftext and prop up our self-righteousness.

Let us then, speak only of what Christ has done for us and through us for the good of our neighbor, being careful to assign the praise and glory to him, to the power of his Word and Spirit at work in his church.
