The church during the time of Luther's early ministry was in a sad condition. Knowledge of the Scriptures was rare, therefore, it was difficult to give a hopeful answer even to oneself. The "Preface" to The Small Catechism provides more information.

So, Luther undertook to write a small instruction manual for his churches. It is divided into four parts:

1 The Ten Commandments

2 The Apostles Creed

3 The Lord's Prayer

4 The Sacraments
