Luther does not is not negate good works, any more than the Apostle Paul does. Far from it. He and the apostle are saying, “Do not rely on them for your salvation.” Do not look to your deeds for your worth in God’s eyes. Also, do not look at your lack of deeds. These things do not enhance or sully your worth to God. Yet there are two things that confirm your worth to him.

One: He loves you. I know; go figure. Why would God love you or me? That must be left to another post. Let it stand for now that he is inscrutable. If you could explain everything about God, he would not be divine.

Two: His Son died for you. You represent the shed blood of his only Son. He loves you now like he loves his Son. You are adopted into his family as if you were his child.

So, what you do and do not do are certainly important but they do not save or “unsave” you. It is not “this I have done”; it is, “this his Son has done” that makes all the difference. Trust in that, not in yourself.
