Yes, a person might use so-called faith to justify his sinning. People do it all the time, if only subconsciously. This was the argument in The Epistle to the Romans. Since God’s grace was the answer to our sinful condition, should we keep on sinning so that there will be more grace? Paul’s response is the forceful, “God forbid!” (Romans 6:2). This is not a matter of additional supply to cover additional sinning. God’s grace has been made available to cover our sinful nature. What we must do is remember that he promised us his grace — and has given it. We do not spend (i.e.: sin) more in order to get what we have already been freely given.

We should not use faith in God’s mercy and grace as an excuse to sin. God forbid! But we should take great advantage of his grace when we do sin, remembering the promise that we were sealed with his Spirit in baptism.

When we sin, the answer is not dependence upon our working harder to make up for the sin. The answer is remembering the promise of God’s grace since his promise is sufficient.
