The Antichrist
Comments on Galatians with an ear to Luther’s commentary
Scripture Text: Galatians 3:10 and 1 John 2:18
Series: Comments on Galatians
Perhaps Luther dubbed the Pope as the Antichrist because what he saw the Pope at that time doing was so anti-christian that he could be considered nothing less. Coming from within the church, but teaching against faith in Christ alone, does seem to fit the title of Antichrist.
Yet there have been many Antichrists, and still more will follow. Many with power in the church are against Christ. For example, all who would make works necessary for salvation are against Christ. Many church leaders take liberties with the things of God. They twist the Scriptures to their advantage and gain. Look no further than Houston.
But we may look also to our country and communities and churches. The spirit of Antichrist is everywhere. The “whole antichristian propaganda,” as Lenski puts it, “uses pulpits, cathedrals, the pope’s cathedra, but far, far more; he speaks like a dragon and in deceit through all mediums, newspapers, magazines, books, schools, colleges, universities, parliaments, politicians, scientists, philosophers, merchants, mechanics, laborers, etc.; all the dwellers on the earth are to be dupes of the antichristian world power” (Lenski, R. C. H. The Interpretation of St. John’s Revelation. Lutheran Book Concern, 1935, pp. 413–14.). Anywhere anything other than Christ Jesus is required for salvation, there is the Antichrist at work.
