The Confidence of Faith
Comments on Galatians with an ear to Luther’s commentary
Scripture Text: Galatians 3:10 and 2 Corinthians 3:4–6
Series: Comments on Galatians
Lest you think David is merely overconfident because he has been triumphant before over lion and bear, he does not credit his confidence with himself. He does not insist to King Saul that his is an excellent marksman, or that his skill at fighting will deliver him from the giant. The Lord is David’s confidence (Proverbs 3:26). “Such is the confidence that we have through Christ toward God” (2 Corinthians 3:4). Faith does not muster human bravado but instead, a holy confidence in God. As David looked to the Lord’s deliverance, we too may depend upon God to be delivered by the power of his hand. We must not place our trust in our skill, our religious actions, or other good works, but have confidence in God alone through faith.
